Kovach Wins Again

The 99th playing of the STLDGA Griesedieck Men’s Championship can be remembered
as the year of OT!  88 players teed it up on Thursday at Meadowbrook Country Club.
The course was in terrific shape, and played tough at 6,924 Yards.
The morning rounds brought some excellent golf, with Skip Berkmeyer, our 2017 Men’s
Champion from the Legends, and Toppie Hogan, from Old Warson, shooting 4 Under
68’s. Frankie Thomas, from Meadowbrook, and David Johnson, from Norwood,
recording 71s. Chris Kovach, from Old Hickory, shot an even par 72 in the afternoon
wave.
Scott McClellan, from Winghaven, recorded a 68 on Friday, for a two day total of 143,
while Drew Pranger, from Glen Echo, shot 69. Berkmeyer shot even par on Day 2, to
be the Stroke Play Medalist at 140. McClellan was second at 142, Pranger at 143, and
Thomas at 144.

Five of the eight matches on Saturday went 19 holes. The Meadowbrook members
were most gracious in letting the matches go thru their rounds in order to complete the
matches .

In the Quarterfinal matches Saturday afternoon, three of the four matches went 20
holes.

The Semi Finals on Sunday morning also featured some great golf, with Kovach
defeating Cusumano-1 Up, and Niezing defeating Hogan 2 & 1.

The final match was simply awesome. Kovach and Niezing had birdies flying
everywhere, with 12 birdies recorded, including a birdie by Kovach on the 19th hole to
win his second Men’s Championship, having won at Old Warson in 2015.

All in all, great championship, great venue, a lot of great golf, and a lot of great support
from the Meadowbrook membership to allow us to hold the Championship at
Meadowbrook.

Carron, Superintendent and his crew for having the course in tremendous condition.
